S
tudies of Volcanoes and Earth Movements:

1. Fun movies = Dante's Peak, Volcano, Super Eruption,
and for earthquakes= watch Core or Journey to Center of the Earth.
2.  Below are 2 videos I downloaded from Nova and National Geographic.  There are many to find online:

Dangerous eruptions
PBS video about volcano eruptions

Below is a video from National Geographic
Lava river flows
History of the USA and its volcanoes of the "Northwest":

1. Geologist ---collect rock and ash samples, take readings of gases, air and soil temperatures, ground and land movements, and also seismic activity from quakes.

2. In 1980------geologist David Johnston was killed on the rim as St Helen blew.

     (picture of him shown below)

In l993 six geologists were killed near the volcano of Galeras in the country of Colombia.   ( over 30 total have been killed studying volcanoes since l975 around the World !!!

3.  The Cascade Mountains make up a chain of ranges from the northern edge of Washington State down to south-central California.

***They are very popular resort and vacation spots, and offer some scenic places to visit.

( Even Lake Tahoo is near enough to get a glimpse of the Cascades.
)

4.  When you see any sports near Portland, Oregon or Seattle, Washington--------------------------
a typical sight to see is the famous
Mt . Rainier shown below:

Picture
5.  Alaska has 52 volcanoes, but most are in remote locations and away from large towns/ and people.

6.  Hawaii = has 10 volcanoes, but most will erupt in a quiet /"oozing style"---- called
Shield Volcanoes.

7. My favorite volcano site is called  CRATER LAKE .  The Indians named it Mt . Mazama.
Picture
Crater Lake erupted over 7000 years ago.

Below is a summary of the parts of a Volcano and its main vent.

Summary about Volcanoes:

1.  Key parts = the vents, magma chamber, the pipe or throat, crater, with lava flows (after eruption)

2. landforms = volcanic neck, dike, sill, batholiths, domes mountains, hot springs, geysers
mountains, hot springs, geysers,

3. Types of eruption = quiet, explosive, and combinations /

4.  Types of volcanoes: ( based on cone shape),

Shield,Lava-Plateaus, Cinder-cone, and Composites

5.  Life Cycle of a volcano:

  a.  Dormant = resting or sleeping / might wake up to erupt-example was Mt St Helens (had slept for 130)

  b. Extinct = is dead or very unlikely to ever erupt again

  c. Active = of course it has been erupting or shows signs of more activity  ( Mt Etna)

6. Mt Etna = largest mountain in Europe and is maybe the most active volcano in the World ( been active or alive now and then for the last 2, 500 years !

Picture
eruption of Mt Etna in 2011---notice the lava flows

7.  Hot - spots =  unlike all those volcanoes of the Ring of Fire or along the plates of continents---there also are volcanoes in the middle of the oceans or in the middle of the continents ( Hawaii or even Yellowstone Park)
Picture
Old Faithful in Yellowstone ( erupts once/ hour)

Above are two pictures from volcanic activity in Hawaii.

Paricutin ---eruption in Mexico in l943:

1.  Story = a farmer went to his corn-field and saw a hole in his field about 10-15 feet wide.

2.  He then went into the village and was gone most of the day, but when he came back there was a small volcano mountain now about 20-20 feet tall !

3. It grew in the next few weeks to over 200 feet tall and erupted for over 6 months !

***the three pictures below are of Paricutin***

Ancient volcanoes--now dead or inactive for hundereds of years.  An example are the Rocky Mts. --known as batholiths shown below:

Project assignment:

find information and set up a power-point concerning a famous volcano:

examples = Mt Pinatubo, Mt Etna, Mt Vesuvius, Mt Mazama, Mt St Helens, ...

**** its a long, long list

***requirements will be set up later

Hawaiian active volcano known as Mt. Kilauea.
Picture
Spectacular volcano called Mt. Tambora.
Picture
Mt. Pinatubo, one of the most active volcanoes in our Eastern  Hemisphere of S.E. Asian islands.
Picture
Mount Rainer, Washington.   Very popular USA mountain to hike but very dangerous to those not experienced.
