Saturn ( 6th planet)

*read pages 84 and 89

1.  Our 2nd largest planet

2.  Full of rings. Its full of layers of rings are are known as A,B,C,D, E layers.

    We now know that Jupiter,
     Uranus and Neptune do
     as well.

3.  The rings are 1000's of materials of ice, rocks and pieces or particles of dust left over from Saturn's creation.

4.   They all orbit Saturn with huge gaps or 100's of miles between each layer.

5. Some people call them "moonlets"

6.  Has 56 moon
s, we think?

The largest is called Titan, which
     is bigger than Mercury.

Each moon has its own story and might become a place for future astronauts to land on or not.

My favorite memory of Saturn were the

Voyager missions in the l980's

Do you remember what One A.U. = ?

That is one astronomical unit or the distance Earth is from the Sun.

So 1 A.U. =  93, million miles

Voyager 1 was 112 AU. away from Earth:

or 112 times 93 million miles.

( you do the math)

Picture
If you look carefully you notice the Asteroid Belt between Mars and Jupiter

Now Saturn is 10 to the first power from Earth or basically 100 times X  1 AU away ( 93 million x 10 basically)

Now look at how far the Oort Clouds are:  ( they make our comets )

Then my favorite-----Look at the closest star to us :  its called
Alpha Centauri:

Centauri is 100
, 000 light years away

or have a space shi
p travel the speed of light (8.3 miles / per second)

you will reach : Alpha Centauri in :

 100, 000 years !   amazing don t you think?

My favorite moon of Saturn is called Titan

***it has rivers and oceans of liquid hydrogen-carbons !!!!

Can you imagine riding in a space canoe there some day ?

Picture
Yes, its quite big and worth a

futuristic mission for space travelers.

Here is proof that there are storms in the atmosphere of Saturn:

Below is a picture of a series of storms known as the alley of storms:

I really think that Saturn perhaps even more than Jupiter will be a futuristic trip for exploration in space:

Below is a video I found about Saturn:
