History of Exploring the Ocean -----why would anyone want to travel around the World for 3 years or more on a ship?

**Your boat is either powered by sails or a steam engine.  But this is a scientific trip and you will measure and study many things?    Can you think of some?

1. You can take water temperatures and also  use cable to lower the thermometers
2. AS you lower the cable you can have instruments or tools that can scrap or collect objects/ and materials from teh ocean floot.
3.  How would you find animals/ fish?     ( use nets and/ or crates, traps)
4. Travels will also see many islands and experience forms or weather and winds.

HMS Challenger ( 1872-1875)
1.  British crew that collected 50 volumes of data and over 4 000 new organisms.
2. Science team learned information on water chemistry, ocean currents, ocean-life,
and the shape of the ocean floor.  It was the most succesful science journey ever.

Captain James Cook ( late 1700 s )
1. His crew traveled around the World to make maps of the oceans and the coutries of the World.  This became or first official World map or atlas.
2.  He lead 3 voyages of exploration and they also studied the stars, plants, animals and early oceanography scientific information.

Christopher Columbus: ( 1492, had 4 voyages to America)
