THE FORGOTTEN HERO
Scott Crossfield-test pilot "Ace"
1. In your textbook read about the history of our space program. Better know as N.A.S.A.
2. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration began in 1958. Its mission was to explore space, its legacy was incredible discoveries, adventures, and making life today amazing with never-ending advancements! WE ALL SHOULD BE GRATEFUL FOR N.A.S.A.
3. The beginning of NASA was to search for the best people available to become our first astronauts. From several hundred men only 7 were chosen. (the Mercury Seven)

4. Several historic early space missions and work was done before the "Mercury Seven" ever flew in space. A lot of men and women in key locations of Huntsville, Alabama and the states of New Mexico, Arizona, and Nevada helped began NASA.
5. The two key states became Texas and Florida; later know as "the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, and the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.
6. The first two most important missions was getting a rocket into space and later to get a living individual into space. The two missions are historic NASA success stories. They were the Explorer satellite flight and the journey "of Ham the Chimp"

7. Finally the first major project began; Project Mercury and putting "man in space".
Along with Russia there became a space - race between each country and the World was watching. It was part of the famous COLD WAR between USSR and USA.
***the United States of America sent up its first man in Space in l961 with pilot Alan Shepard, who is the only member of the "seven" who also went to the MOON! ***another "forgotten Hero"

Now, lets watch the actually video of the first U.S.A. astronaut go into space ! This is how TV broadcast the flight of Alan Shepard.
8. After the success of Alan Shepard's flight on "Freedom" it was then the next goal to get man to travel around the World in an orbital flight. This was not to occur until two flights later. On our 3rd mission in space a new "HERO" emerged.
JOHN GLENN---first to orbit the Earth !!!
First lets watch a short video of Mr. Glenn as a 90 year old man, talking about NASA and his flight. **notice has articulate he still is, and "young for his age." Also observe how proud and honored he is for being part of the Mercury 7". You will see how humble and what a fine man Mr. Glenn is. *****No wonder schools are named after John Glenn !
It was February 20, 1962 and the Marine pilot from Ohio was the 3rd NASA man in space but he would become the very first USA astronaut to orbit the EARTH! There was danger involved and uncertainty of all the danger and if he would return safely back to Earth. Here is the "live broadcast" from ABC news on this historic day.
1. The strangest fact about the USA space program was that Dr. Von Braun was a German and he did develop missiles for "Hitler" in WW II. He refused to wear a uniform and wished to have build rockets for space travel and not weapons to kill people At the end of the war the United States Army found Dr Von Braun who with his fellow science friends were hoping to be found by the Americans and not the Russians. The Russians did find other scientist but Dr Von Braun was the "main catch."
2. Thus; all the history of NASA is highlighted and successful, due to having Dr. Von Braun as our director of NASA.

3. readings from page 38 of testbook: Project Gemini---now NASA moved from one man space travel to two person with several missions. The most famous was Gemini 4 and its space walk in l965 .
*****
A key event was the practice of docking when part of a space capsule will separate and then later re-lock or "dock"
4. Apollo missions------3 person travel with what is called he "mothership and the lunar lander. Several missions were done in space to prepare for the actually event of going to the Moon and landing.
a. the first mission that went to the Moon was Apollo 8 and this event happen at Christmas time in l968.
b. Apollo 8, 9 and 10 all went to the Moon and took several pictues and measures about the Moon and did orbit the Moon as well. They were very important missions
c. Apollo 11---July of l969 three men from NASA went to the Moon---Michael Collins, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin.
d. Apollo 12, 13, 14, 15, 16,17 continued this amazing adventure to the Moon.
e. Apollo 13-----from the movie you can see how this mission experienced a dangerous event and some how survived.
*** they had their equipment stop working and almost died due to lack of oxygen and engines not getting them back to Earth. A very good movie to watch and understand NASA.
(read page 38 in your textbook about Apollo 13 event)
5. Assignment = be sure to read about Apollo missions to the Moon

The following videos are from the movie Apollo 13:
1. Focus on all the missions of Apollo: from Apollo 1 up to Apollo 10, and all the others from 11-17
2. Apollo missions are a hoax online nonsense !!!!! Why?
3. Apollo ONE: tragedy----the forgotten story: next week
The above picture is of the original seven Mercury astronauts.
The tragedy of Apollo One: an electric fire in the capsule during a regular session of testing equipment before launch day. The men were not able to get the door opened after the start of the fire and died quickly. The following video explains:
History of the space program began first with the test pilots of the l950s and their new jet planes and new form of high speed air travel. Many pilots died while flying.
***watch the following several videos of TEST PILOTS.
Now enjoy the beginning of a Science Fiction Movie:
Big questions are : How big is space and the universe?
How far are objects away? How far is the Moon from Earth?
How far is Mars and how long will it take to get there?
What about these interesting questions?
What is speed of light? What is speed of sound?
What is warp speed? What is mach?
"So, what is the distance of our Milky Way from one edge of it to the other? "
How about this ? ----- What about time and what happened before the beginning?
Is there an end of the Universe? What is on the other side of that end or edge?
--------------------------------------------
Lets take a time out and have some fun:

I want to review some "space math" with all of you:
1. Speed of sound:
2. Speed of light :
3. distance of Earth to Moon
4. distance of Earth to Mars
5. the distance of the Sun to the Earth
6. the distance of the Sun to our closest star
7. the distance of "our Milky Way "
8. the distance of our Milky Way to our nearest galaxy
9. and a whole bunch of other things too !!!
