Studies of the space program and progress into our future:
The most amazing science-fiction writer of all time! Without his imagination would we have had the real space missions?
Have you heard of: Around the World in 80 Days, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Twenty-Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Mysterious Island, and First Man on the Moon?

History of Rocketry: began with "fireworks" and the "fire arrow" that Chinese warriors used 100's of years ago. The
first actually rockets were "fireworks" that Chinese soldiers
used to scare off those they fought in battle.
Even in the War of 1812 with England and the USA battles
had "fire rockets" sent over the heads of soldiers in war. Do
you remember the words of our Star Spangled Banner-"the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air" ?

Dr. Robert Goddard-----father of rocketry for the USA
In 1915 Dr. Goddard invented the modern day rocket.

The new era of warfare became the deadly "missile" when Germany began bombing London, England in the early l940 's of World War II.
These rockets by Dr. Wernher von Braun were called the V-2 rockets. Later they became our NASA rockets of the early 1950's. Our military in the Air Force and Army experimented with several launches, some not successful. Finally the government hired Dr. von Braun and his German scientist to start NASA in late l950 s.
The main rocket invented was called the Saturn IV and V, as tall as the length of a football field! These same type of rockets are still used today to send up satellites
and space probes. (what is a space probe? )

The two button texts = videos of the space shuttle
At the end of the Apollo missions, a new era moved from "rocketry" to NASA's "space jet" called the Space Shuttle.
It was the first spacecraft that can take off and land back to Earth. The crew size for shuttle missions are from 5-7 people.
The main use of our Space Shuttles were to bring up to space all forms of communication devices for our cell phones, satellite TV, and weather satellites, and into space stations.
In your textbook read on page 54 about the space shuttle. You will learn we have
built six shuttles.
The two most famous ones were the Columbia and the Challenger, both had terrible tragedies and all crew members died in these two accidents in space.

The most current space program is the International Space Station.
It allows time for several months of astronauts to live in space. It began in a way with "Star Trek".

The International Space Station is powered by 8 large arrays of solar panels. These total 250, 000 solar panels or the ability of produce enough electricity for 55 large houses!
***the I.S.S. is usually over 220 miles above Earth !!!
The second picture above is of the MIR space station. It was the first space station and existed for over 25 years.
***read about the space station on page 55 in text.

1. Space Shuttle = a spacecraft with ability to fly, land and fly again (like an airplane).
a. At lift-off the shuttle has 2 rocket boosters and one large fuel tank that all will fall away from spacecraft.
b. When shuttle lands most will come down in California and then brought back to NASA"piggy-back".
2. ** Before the space shuttle were famous jets:
****At Edwards Air Force Base in the l950-70's many test
pilots flew new experimental air craft, and later these pilots became our early and later astronauts.
Below are some of the most famous: --the X-15, the Stealth Bomber, the Thunderbird, B-29, P-51, and the unmanned -"drone".

Many of the space shuttle missions travel from Edwards Air Force Base in California back to Florida. In the Columbia disaster, the space shuttle had issues landing at Edwards
and had its accident over the state of New Mexico/ Texas.
2. Our many shuttle missions of the l980's-2010 traveled to
space with payload to build, repair or replace satellites.
3. Astronauts were able to wear regular clothing and breathe
without oxygen tanks. This was similar to living on the space stations. Most shuttles had 5-7 crew members.
