Earthquakes Study Game--April 23rd:

1.  List 4 things that can be done for your home and earthquake safety, and or steps in being safe in quake.

2.  Which travels 4 miles/ per second ( S or P waves) ?
3. Place in correct order which cities are more likely to have earthquake activity ( most active first)

Des Moines, Burlington, St. Louis, San Francisco, Memphis, and Miami

4. Match the following definitions with (shearing, tension and compression).

a.the force the will squeeze rock until it breaks or folds
b. mass of rock will slide or push in opposite directions
c. the crust will pull apart or stretch layers of rock mass

5. Draw and describe what Pangea is/ or "Ring of Fire".

6.  Label each images as ( anticline or syncline )
Picture
Picture
7.  These are the "formulas" or equations for using understandings of earthquake studies: (top or bottom)

Distance = Time x Speed           Time = Distance/speed

or Time = distance x speed        Distance = Speed/time

8.  Draw arrows to represent ( tension, compression and shearing) movements of earthquakes.

9.  Draw the Earth and label the four layers:

10.  use the following four definitions of the layers and identify which layer is defined in these 4 sentences:

a. the very inside layer, pure solid rock/ 800 miles thick
b. the thin outside layer, full of topsoil, small rocks/minerals and sand.  ( 5 to 25 miles thick )
c.  the super thick 1800 miles to 2000 miles of hot molten material with high heat intensity
d.  over 1000 miles thick and surrounds the interior layer but inside of the molten matter.

11.  Name 4-5 cities that are near the San Andreas Fault:

12.  Define these four words ( shaking, liquefaction, aftershocks, tsunamis).

13. Name 4 instruments that measure and record earthquakes?

14.  Which is called the Richter Scale and which of definitions below is knows as the Mercalli Scale?

a.  rating of 1-10 and based on size of the earthquake and its reading from a seismograph machine

b. rating is from 1-12 and based on how much property and land damage occurs after the quake happened.  An example =" 1 - 3 is where unstable objects have fallen"
