National Aeronautics and Space Administration

A.  Only 1/2 of 1 % of taxes go to our
     space program.

B. Now--to send our NASA astronauts to
outer-space we PAY Russia to have
    them go to up!

C.  We have not had our own space
mission with NASA people for about
    ten years!

---------------------------------------------------

              Chapter One: pages 2-29
Picture
At the very end of our Astronomy Unit I will review and summarize most information from Chapter One.

Below I will list some key words and history of space exploration and studies in outer space:

Scientific Methods:   pages 4--5

*** the definition of the word Science = knowledge

(Science is the process of observing and testing ideas)

1.  Identify a question:  "Is there life on Mars?"
2.  Form a hypothesis: "Gather information about Mars"
3.  Test the information: " Perform experiments"
4.  Analyze:  " Look for patterns in the data collected"
5.  Draw conclusions:  " Decide and have opinions "

Theory
= an idea that has been tested.

The claim that there is water on the planet Mars so  there might be life on Mars = a theory.

======================================

The Size of the Universe:

1.  We today have gained knowledge from our tools :

   a.  refracting telescopes = has lenses at front of telescope
   b.  reflecting telescopes = has lensed at back of telescope
   c.  optics = use of computers and lasers
   d.  radio telescopes = measure radio waves far out in space

Above is a typical refracting telescope and the most common one to buy.

Above is a more advanced reflecting telescope.

2.  Now we believe that 90% of the Universe is empty space.

3.  Thus: only 10 % of the Universe is made up of ( planets, moons, asteroids, meteors, comets and star systems.)

4. Distances in space are enormous:

a.  The Sun = 90 million miles from
                        the Earth
b.  Mars --- it would take almost 2
years to travel to Mars in
                 a modern space-ship

c. The closest star is billion of miles
away.  ( called Alpha Centauri  )

  ***It would take over one

year to get to Alpha Centauri if the
    space ship travels 100,000 miles

             per one second !

d.  Every galaxy has millions of stars
There are billions of galaxies in
   space !

-------------------------------------------

Summary of Space Missions:

**read pages 15-29

1.  Rockets - travel over 6 miles/sec
     to escape the Earth's gravity.

***below is the space shuttle

2.  Satellites:

The Russians had the very first
satellite in l957.  Today we have
hundreds of satellites above Earth.

Picture
3. Space Probes:

These are forms of satellites that go out deep into space and our Solar System.   They give us most of our information about our planets.

***They have cameras and radio transmitters to collect a lot of data.

4.  The Original Seven:  our first astronauts of NASA

Picture
5.  Project Mercury = first missions in space and with just one astronaut in space ship.
Picture
6.  Project Gemini = project in mid l960's with two astronauts in a space ship.  Famous for having the first space walk.
Picture
7.  Project Apollo = missions in preparation to trip to the Moon.

Had 3 astronauts in one spaceship.  Had Apollo 11, 12, 11, 14, 15, 16 and 17 missions land on the Moon.

8. Space Shuttle and Space Stations:

A.  Space Shuttle was space-ship with 5-7 astronauts and had the ability to land safely back to Earth.

( it never went to the Moon, all its
    missions were within our Earth's
     atmosphere and would orbit
      Earth )

B.  Space Stations:

Having living quarters for several people in space.

They can spend months in space and do many experiments while orbit around the Earth.

Today we have the International Space Station with 16 nations

There have been over 50 launches into space stations since l973 where astronauts live in space above Earth.
