August 12th:

2nd Journal Assignment

1.  You will receive the first lesson
    about outer space and astronomy

2.  Mr. Myrtue will be using his website to introduce you to this subject.

3.  He will show you the site for about 40 minutes or so.

4.  During this time ( in your journal)

you will write 15 things that he  will

show you or talk to you about.

***be sure to write the date August
12th down in your journal

Journal First Assignment:

1.  Write down 10 things Mr. Myrtue

explains or shows you:

about JOURNALS

Crater Lake National Park

by Mr. Myrtue

(How to do a simply power-point )
Picture

Crater Lake is actually a caldera which is the rim after it has exploded from an ancient volcano.

It was known over 700 years ago as Mt. Mazama
Picture

Crater Lake is located in the southwestern part of Oregon.

It is a sister volcano to Mt St Helens in the Cascades Mts.
Picture

This park is full of wildlife and some are tame enough to even feed.

Its a favorite place to hike and camp.
Picture

Crater Lake Nationl Park is one of my favorite places to see.  Mr. Myrtue

Activity:  2nd  official----journal assignment--- August 10th/11th

1.  Use your new textbook and look into the introduction of all the Units and list of chapters  ( you will find several topics you may or may not have knowledge/ interest of).    Spend some time looking at pages of text and observe some of units.

2.  Now ------I wish for you to pick 3 topics or areas you have an interest in:

Step One: ( pick your 3 topics)----list them in YOUR JOURNAL.

Step Two----start answering the questions below for each topic IN JOURNAL :

a.  list 2-3 reasons why you have an interests
b.  What do I already know about the topic ( before using my book for information)
c.  What are 2-3 questions or things you d like to know more about the topics?
d.  Write down 2-3 "bits" of information found in you textbook or in your
lap top about the topic.  This can be kind of short and simple.

***Do this 3 separate times for each of those 3 topics you picked  ALL IN YOUR JOURNAL ****

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Step 3 : start on Friday ON TAKING INFO FROM YOUR JOURNAL AND TRANSFER THIS INTO---  ( making a short mini-power point)

*** THIS IS JUST over ONE OF YOUR THREE  topics you wrote on in your journal.

Directions for your "mini-power-point" :

*** With use of your online access:
Pick one of your 3 topics and put together a short summary with 4-5 pictures you found about this science topic---INTO A POWER - POINT project.  **you will show this to class later next week.

With each picture/per slide/ add the information from your journal
and set it up similar to my example I gave on Crater Lake National Park.

When you get down you will have a short 4-5 slide power point with pictures
and a little information.

========================================================
4.  FOR EXTRA-CREDIT------- pick a topic in your textbook you have little if any knowledge about and add to this assignment / and find some info about this topic
and also write a short summary in your journal, and then add another short
power - point about your topic.  ( THIS IS EXTRA-CREDIT )

**examples:
---- unique sea mammals like the dugongs, narwhale or orca.
---a guyot on the ocean floor---what is it?
--- Isle Royale and its battle of the Moose/wolves conflict

===========================================================
                                        ********Review about Journals ********

The Journal --------part of entire year of assignments and responsibilities:
1.  Have a notebook for this class and bring daily/ it will be used for "bell ringers"and for extended class time activities and/ or assignments
2.  I WILL COLLECT JOURNALS ABOUT ONCE/ EVERY 2 WEEKS.
3.  Always date your work and the day you start---this is very important.  **

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

 The Journal-----3rd activity

**** Make sure you are neat in your journal as you do this !!!!!!!

You may use the textbook or your laptop------even use my teacher website

THE PRE--TEST---for astronomy-------DO NOT USE ANY SOURCES FOR HELP !!!

***use these pages in your textbook for help:   Chapter 22, 23, 24,25 ( 614-722)
Part One:
1.  What is the difference between a constellation and a galaxy?
2.  How many stars are in most constellations?
3.  Name 3-4 constellations ( spell as best you can )
4.  What is a larger constellation:  the Big Dipper or Orion the Hunter?
5.  Can you name any stars?  Try to list a few
6.  Is Vega; a star or a constellation
7.  How many phases/ or faces are there for our Moon?
8.  Can you name 3-4 phases?  Try to list a few
9.  Do you know what the Milky Way Galaxy is?  Why is it special?
10.  What is the difference between Earth's rotation and its revolution?

Part Two:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
this is for November Journal Assignment:  ignore for now !!!!!!!!

Chapter Three----Oceanography  Project:

1.  Step One= goal is to pick two animals/ organism from the "sea".  This means it is a marine organism.  There are many examples.
2.  Go online and simply type in word search:    list of ocean animals or list of marine organisms ( ex: pufferfish, barracuda, elephant seal,  eels, orca, otter, and sea urchin)

**key guide is that the animal or organism lives in area of some form of sea water.
3.  Once you have decided which two organisms you d like to learn about and do your project, inform Mr. Myrtue and "sign-up."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4.  Steps doing your project;

a. Find and use in your power-point  2 to 4 pictures of each animal/ organism.
b. Label where the picture or body of water is at if possible.  Another way to label each picture is to identify what the organism is doing or is near. (ask for help here)
c. Describe your animal and tell about its body features.
d. Tell where your animal/ organism lives or some places to find them (its habitat)
e. What is its diet ?  Is it a predator or is it more of a prey?
f.  Perhaps tell what its lifespan is, or how its reproduction works, maybe show a short summary of  its daily behavior.

g.  From your research describe any special characteristics of your organism.
***the total number of pages for each animal needs to be 7-8 pages.   Keep each separate animal/ organism power-point to no more than 10 pages.

***MAKE SURE to ask for help and show me your project before you email the complete assignment.

DUE DATE = MARCH 3RD (Monday)----below is some examples of setting up your project.  The below examples are not completed but show partial completion:

The Hammerhead Shark, by Mr. Myrtue

Picture
What are we looking at ?

My favorite shark is the hammerhead shark.  **next to chicken, its also the tastiest meal around!
Picture
In our World the "hammerheads" are scattered on coastal areas of both hemispheres and seem to thrive along the Equatorial areas of Earth.
1  Notice the large number of hammerheads in the Caribbean Sea.
2.  Almost all of the South American coastlines have hammerheads.
3.  The entire island of Madagascar is surrounded by hammerheads.
Picture
This great hammerhead lives near the bottom of the Caribbean Sea near the Bahamas.
1.  This predator has wide-eyes to allow it to have excellent vision, it might be the best hunter of all sharks !   They love to eat sting-rays.
Picture
Hammerheads exist in their schools and seem to enjoy life at our sea bottoms .
1. This is called "migration" and they tend to come together more in the summer months to find colder waters and their time for reproduction to occur.
2. They do not lay eggs, they give birth to live "pups" --  6 to 50 are born in litter.
3.  They have life-span of 20-30 years.
4. There are 9 different kinds of hammerheads, the largest is the (great hammerhead shark)----its 13 feet long and weighs over 500 lbs.

Picture
My 2nd marine animal is the SEA LION:
Picture
One of the most amazing sea mammals I believe is the sea lion !
Picture
So very cute
Picture
Picture
One sad event is the :Kill of the baby pups

Below is a map of where a large number of sea lions live across the Bering Strait and the Gulf of Alaska.
